JEFFREY LEWIS & THE JUNKYARD

A PROPOS DE JEFFREY LEWIS Jeffrey Lewis was raised in New York City and is a maker of comic books, tragi-comic folk narratives, and head-smashing garage rock - all of which meld together into the band currently known as Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard.  With brother Jack on bass and David Beauchamp on drums, Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard incorparate a disparate blend of influences from 60s acoustic psychedelia like Pearls Before Swine to the experimental art-punk of the Fall and the urban lyricism of Lou Reed, sounding a bit like if Woody Guthrie fronted Sonic Youth.  Live shows also incorporate "low budget videos", Jeff’s large illustrations displayed to accompany certain songs, such as Jeff's educational multi-part History of Communism, or the fan-favorite chills of "The Creeping Brain".  In 2001 Jeffrey Lewis signed to Rough Trade Records and has since released five albums.

The Jeffrey Lewis band has toured the US, UK, Europe, and Australia, sharing bills with Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, Devendra Banhart, Black Dice, Thurston Moore, the Fall, Beth Orton, Frank Black, the Fiery Furnaces, Daniel Johnston, Scout Niblett, the Mountain Goats, the Moldy Peaches, Cornershop, the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, Wooden Wand, the Cribs, the Danielson Famile, Dr. Dog, Kimya Dawson, Adam Green, Akron/Family, Roky Erickson, Au Revoir Simone, and others.

The album Jeffrey Lewis: 12 Crass Songs, released by Rough Trade in late 2007, is a collection of songs by the legendary anarchist punk band Crass, reworked by Jeffrey into glorious folk, rock, psychedelic, orchestral and electronica productions which dazzle the ear while losing none of the political power of the originals - an album which garnered praise from Crass themselves as well as four stars in Rolling Stone magazine and many other enviable plaudits. The most recent release by Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard is 2009's 'Em Are I, which was also widely praised; a full-page feature in Mojo Magazine declared it "brilliant... full of wit and musical variations," while a 9-star review in All Music Guide called 'Em Are I "not just Lewis' most consistent album, but also his most truly affecting and easily his most successful outing to date."

'Em Are I and 12 Crass Songs follow in the footsteps of the critically acclaimed Jeffrey & Jack Lewis: City & Eastern Songs, which was produced by Kramer (Galaxie 500, Butthole Surfers, Low, Daniel Johnston, etc) and was selected as one of 2006's best albums in Time Out NY, the Boston Globe, CMJ Monthly and elsewhere. Jeffrey has recently been writing for the New York Times' "Measure For Measure" songwriting feature, and his most recent comic book series Fuff is currently up to issue seven.
